5 Things you need to do to clear your mind of clutter

Mantuition leading you astray?

Before you make any changes in your life the first thing you need to do is try and find some ‘head space’. I’m not sure where I first heard this term but it essentially means putting yourself in a position where you have time to think clearly about what issues you have in your life that need addressing. To avoid this stage is like driving along a motorway having forgotten to consult a map first. you’ll just end up guessing which turn off to take and more likely than not, your journey will be a great deal longer than you intended.

avoid a wrong turn

How can you put yourself in a position so that you have a clear head?

It certainly isn’t easy. There are so many distractions designed to keep you trapped in a world of chaos and impluse. Going against the flow takes a great deal of will power and commitment.

For example, One of the simpliest wasy of clearing your head is to stop drinking. Sounds easy when wrtten down in a sentance and it is very easy to say, but If you have ever tried to go out with freinds, family or collegues on a special occasion and stay sober, the pressure to conform is imense. You very quickly become singled out as an odd ball, “why aren’t you drinking?” as if you are doing the weirdest thing ever. If this isn’t a problem to you then great, but if you haven’t experienced the collective peer group pressure from the conforming-to-drink brigade then it is truly an eye-opener.

What are the 5 biggest distractions in your life?

This will of course be different to everyone but there are 5 areas that you can focus on

  1. Turn off your TV and go and do something less boring instead - in an instant imagine how much free time you’ll have
  2. quit drinking or at the very least cut down (same applies to any drugs that you might be a little overly partial to)
  3. Choose your friends (and partner!) carefully - spend more time with people who support you and give you energy and try and avoid spending time with those who leave you feeling exhausted
  4. Clear your desk - making sure you’re not leaving work fretting about an important task you keep putting off and you’re on top of your main source of income - even if you hate it!
  5. Sort out your garbage - by this I mean start sorting your home life out: pay the bills that need paying; call the people you said you would call; do the jobs around the house that you keep putting off; clear your living space of clutter; wash the dishes; and wash and dry the clothes that are hanging off every chair in the house!

Sounds simple doesn’t it! But it isn’t at all and I’ll discuss each of these in more detail later.

Making these changes are going to cause you some hardship. Maybe it sounds patronising, but be honest with yourself. Stop and think about how much time every day you actually have to yourself. You are probably going to be reluctant to change anything that interferes with your normal routine. but the biggest leap starts from taking those first small steps. Once you’ve found time for yourself to think clearly then you’ll be able to start seeing what it is you really need to change. Good Luck:)

  1. interesting but hard to follow especially to remain sober all the time. long walks or runs are a good idea but not when it’s 43 degrees
